BMW Basics

  • Know yourself, know your car and know your tools. Before any work is carried out on your car, make sure you are capable of doing it. Some task are complex and require special tools that only the BMW shop has. If you think you can’t handle the repair task, bring it to a Authorized BMW Dealer or an independent qualified BMW shop.

  • There are many high voltage cables in the car.  Among some are the cables from the coil, spark plugs or distributor. The high voltage produced by the ignition system could be fatal.

  • Make sure your car is well supported when working underneath it. i.e. never work on a car when it is supported only by a jack, nor use other non-qualified lifts such as cinder blocks and wood. Make sure the car is level and you might want to disconnect the battery to prevent someone from starting the car when you are beneath it.

  • Wear safety clothing when you are working on your car. Goggles, gloves are the basic items that you should be wearing when dealing with harmful substances

  • Do not run your engine while you work unless there is a good ventilation system present. Keep your garage door open. Remember: Carbon Monoxide can be fatal and you will not feel any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Do not even think of using nuts, bolts, fasteners, washers that are deformed, cracked or show signs of wear and tear. These parts are cheap; do not skimp on parts like these. Failure to replace them may result in great monetary lost and possible injury or death.

  • Materials in brakes and the clutch may contain asbestos fibers. Be very careful about it as this is linked directly to cancer and eventually might lead to death.

  • Always remember to disconnect the battery when you are working on any electrical or fuel system! and don't forget to get the codes for your radio, if not you won't be able to enjoy the nice music that BMW provides, but if you really do not know the codes, you can get it from your dealer.
