Have you ever driven in a rainy day and could
not see well because of your windshield wiper's bad condition? Have you
ever slammed on the brakes because you did not see a person crossing the
crosswalk during a heavy downpour? Probably you may have and that is
indeed a safety issue.
Old wiper blades are common amongst our cars,
many people assume that if they live in "dry" places and do not
use the wipers do not need to change it. This is very wrong. Before we go
any further I would like to stress out that wipers should be changed every
6000 Miles or 6 months whichever comes first. This will at least help
motorist to keep their wiper blades at an acceptable level.
Causes of wiper insert degradation:
Sunlight
Dirt, such as sand and clay too
Bug juice
Weather - freezing and extreme
heat
Factors that determine the blades ability to clean:
Material of the wiper - regular wipers are made of rubber,
synthetic ones provides better flexibility during extreme temperatures.
the number of pressure points that the wiper assembly has -
the more pressure points there are, the more evenly the the force is spread
over the windshield, and thus providing a more uniform sweep.
Additional:
For new cars, (a few years old) it is generally safe to
just change the inserts (refills) as the assembly should still be in good
condition ( but always check).
For older cars, you might want to check the wiper blade
(not just the inserts).
